Are Golgi Bodies In Plant And Animal Cells

2 min read

The Golgi body, also known as the Golgi apparatus, is a membrane-bound organelle that plays a central role in the processing, modification, and sorting of proteins and lipids in eukaryotic cells. It is present in both plant and animal cells, although its architecture and some functional details can vary between these two kingdoms.

Presence in Plant Cells

Location and Structure

In plant cells, the Golgi apparatus is typically found in the cytoplasm, often situated near the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the cell wall. Unlike the scattered, individual Golgi stacks seen in many animal cells, plant Golgi bodies frequently appear as stacked cisternae that are not enclosed by a large central vacuole. Each stack consists of a series of flattened, membrane-bound sacs called cisternae, which are differentiated into cis, medial, and trans regions. The cis face receives newly synthesized proteins and lipids from the ER, while the trans face dispatches processed molecules to their final destinations.

Functions

The plant Golgi body performs several essential functions:

  • Glycosylation: It adds sugar residues to proteins and lipids, creating glycoproteins and glycolipids that are crucial for cell‑wall synthesis and signaling.
  • Polysaccharide synthesis: It produces complex carbohydrates such as pectins and hemicellulose, which are incorporated into the plant cell wall.
  • Protein sorting: It directs proteins to the plasma membrane, the cell wall, or to storage organelles like the vacuole.
  • Vesicle formation: It buds off transport vesicles that carry cargo to the plasma membrane or to the developing cell plate during cytokinesis.

A list of key activities includes:

  1. Synthesis of cell‑wall polysaccharides.
    1. Practically speaking, addition of O‑linked sugars to proteins. Modification of N‑linked oligosaccharides. Now, 3. Packaging of enzymes for cell‑wall remodeling.

Location and Structure

In animal cells, the Golgi apparatus is usually positioned near the centrosome and is often described as a perinuclear ribbon of stacked cisternae. Each stack is composed of multiple cisternae that are polarized, with a cis face receiving vesicles from the ER and a trans face
